Sometimes (often) you just have to practice your craft. This week a number of photographers assembled at a studio in downtown Salt Lake City and Zeb volunteered to be our model. It seems that most time the models are female so it is fun when things change up and we have a male model. You can get a bit more edgy in your lighting and you probably won’t need make up. Although, maybe makeup would take a photo shoot to the next level.
The purpose of the photo shoot is to practice using studio lighting. We started with one light and even got up to two or three lights. There is a lot you can do with minimal lighting.
Sports portraits like the following almost demand edgy lighting. You put a light on each side of the model and then one light in front to put some light on the face.
The following is one of my favorite light setups. You can create the illusion you are in a stadium or in a concert.
And then we played with the strobe and a spray bottle of water and I think we added some glycerine. It can help create what looks like beads of sweat on an athlete. Great for shirtless portraits.
