Apparently my dad has always been a fan of sailing and sailboats. I learned this after I had moved out of the house and he started to collect small sailboats. At last count his has about 32 of these boats. They live close to Utah Lake down in Utah County so during the Spring, Summer and Autumn he is able to go sailing and get other people interested in sailing. For the last year or so he has organized the Utah Lake Yacht Club. Students from both BYU and UVU will join up and learn how to sail. There is also a huge group of Boy Scouts and other scouting groups that participate.
This year they will be hitting the “high seas” again and learning the mastery of sailing. I had a few occasions to go and photograph these excursions. And for one outing I actually went on one of the boats. This was my first experience sailing and it is fun. People learn fairly quickly the ins-and-outs of sailing. Mastering the skills obviously will take some time and practice. You can find the Facebook group here.
For the most part the sailing takes place in the Utah Lake Marina in Provo, Utah. It is a small state park so there is a park admission fee. To my knowledge there are no fees to use the gear.
So come join the adventure. Learn how to setup sails, safety, and how to navigate Utah Lake’s marina.
