One way to build a portrait portfolio is to photograph your friends, and maybe even their favorite pet! I photographed Ty at Salt Lake City’s Exchange Place. Its located about 400 South and I have used that block repeatedly because of the variety of textures, backgrounds, and buildings. The lighting was nice. We using natural light.
We photographed for about an hour. An hour to an hour and a half is probably a good length of time for a portrait session. I need to subject to warm up in front of the camera… that can take up to 20 minutes sometimes. And then we start to get the good photographs and great expressions.
And you don’t want to go on too long. The subject wears out before the camera ever will.
