We braved subzero temperatures for the engagement session for Segna & Elecia. They were selected by QSaltLake Magazine to receive an all expenses paid wedding. We photographed the engagement session in a favorite spot in Downtown Salt Lake City that has some cool graffiti, locations, and textures. I brought along my portable lighting kit to make them look their best.
We worked with the limitations of the weather and the couple kept warm by being cozy and cuddly. The goal for an engagement shoot is to loosen up in front of the camera and pretend there is no photographer there. Whispering in the ear. Nibble on the ear. Holding hands. Giving light kisses. We don’t want a full on make out session, grandma might blush. But PDA is more than welcome. It might be awkward for an LGBT couple in public. There are still times were we are harassed. However, that doesn’t happen often and we can always move to another spot.
I love finding variety in the backgrounds. Downtown we just have to walk around the block and we have different buildings, walks, streets, lights, and more to photograph against. We even have some sunbursts for some lens flare. Shooting in the afternoon and late evening means we have more beautiful and directional light. In the winter we have limited light so we have to move quickly. And in the evening we also have less interference of people in the background and we aren’t going to bother other businesses as much.
And I brought along an old Polaroid camera and used some Impossible Project film! It’s now a one of a kind photograph.
