Scientist Headshot at Work

by dav.d

There is a phrase in the photographer community: “The best camera you have is the one you have with you.” This also applies to lighting! The best light is the light you have available. Typically when I am photographing corporate headshots I am using a portable lighting kit. I bring umbrellas, softboxes, lights, batteries and more. However, on my day to day routine I am not carrying that much gear with me. So when the day job asks me on the spur of the moment to photograph someone… I grab the best camera I have with me and hope the light is perfect. Or we go hunting for better light and a great background.

Fortunately the light in the atrium at work was beautiful. I was able to use a grey wall and another wall for the background. This is where I usually photograph corporate headshots, you can see examples here. I do have to spend more time in Photoshop when I use natural/available light in my photography. I have to make sure the exposure is right and the skin might need more attention. You would be amazed how much a big light going through an umbrella helps with people’s skin!

So this was a quick and dirty photo shoot. Create the shots, crunch some pixels in Photoshop, send the files to the client and boom, done in 30 minutes, woo hoo!
