Wow, I think I am getting the hang of some automotive photography! I am not going into car photography full time anytime soon and I still prefer photographing people. But cars and trucks are unique and cool subject matter.
I photographed a restored Toyota Land Cruiser that is from 1969 if I remember this properly. I do know that the paint is the classic quicksand color. I’ve photographed a number of colors include red and beige.
There are a number of ways to photograph trucks and cars. One way is in studio with huge softboxes and tons of lights. We don’t have that kind of budget. These photographs were created with one studio light on a battery. The camera is attached to a tripod and then I create a series of photographs that are then combined in Photoshop. I do spend more time on the computer but I don’t have to spend tens of thousands of dollars for the 30 foot softboxes, ack!
For this photo shoot we started about an hour before sunset. We have darker skies and more directional light. And the strobe doesn’t have to work quite so hard to light the car.
Here is Luis with his son. Luis is the mechanic that buys, restores, finishes, and sells these classic Toyota Land Cruisers. These sell for a decent amount of money when restore; so watch eBay for the next one!
