I figured I would share a bunch of photos of aerialist Brandon Scott. He is the 2016 Male Silks U.S. Aerial Champion and he was performing at SKYFALL on Friday night. I have more photos on my SmugMug website. I’m still stunned by the performance. The lighting, skills, and everything came together for some awesome photographs, so I’m sharing a bunch of my many favorites.
Check out a YouTube video that I put together. It’s about 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. I shot these all handheld. I wasn’t expecting to shoot video until the last moment when the head honchos asked if I could shoot some video. Next time I’ll be more prepared. I edited the video in Final Cut Pro.
I’m still a beginner with the video, but I’m finally gaining some traction in how to shoot and how to edit video. I’m hoping that with in a year, I can be a seasoned pro. It might take longer than that, but I’m having a blast shooting photos and video right now.
Brandon performed at 3 different times and averaged about 15 minutes each time. That is a lot of endurance training and upper body strength. I’m glad my camera and my skills were able to keep up, although I did a lot of whittling. That happens with sports photography—some keepers and a lot of rejects. I also had to crank my ISO settings to get these shots.
The dance’s theme was military. So everyone wore versions of military uniforms.
For the second performance I decided to add in some bounce flash. That helped illuminate Brandon. When shooting in a club, you have cool lighting but it isn’t always hitting your subject in the right way. I should look at creating an actual photo shoot with an aerialist… that would be cool and then just bring my own light and rock it. And a fog machine apparently.
