A few weeks ago my day job held their global convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. They asked if I would photograph the Experience Center where people learn about the new products and also capture their interaction with scientists, the product store, photo booths, and more. The event had more than 11,000 people from around the world.
I also had the opportunity to photograph some of the general sessions at the former Energy Solutions Arena. These can be high energy events where there are musicians, dancers, wireless glow sticks, and more. I think I spent a lot of the time there with 3 cameras so I could photograph the wide angle shots, the telephoto shots, and the whole party atmosphere. There were a number of event photographers on hand and it is fun to watch how other photographers photograph an event.
For the week I created almost 3,000 photographs and I whittled it down to about 900 photos. As Steve Jobs says “Kill your darlings.” You want the best photographs when you photograph this much. Although I do try and keep enough variety for the company to use in future marketing.
I had last photographed one of our conventions a number of years ago and I can definitely see an improvement since that time. Practice and better gear has certainly helped!
