I was the roving event photographer for the 2017 Oscar Night Gala, a fundraiser for the Utah AIDS Foundation. The event raises money for people living with HIV/AIDS in Utah. They provide counseling, prevention services, testing, and much more.
Before each Oscar Gala, I like to see as many nominated movies as possible. I fail miserably each year. I still haven’t seen Black Swan, The Kings Speech, and other best movies. I was hoping more movies would be available to rent before Oscar Night, but no such luck.
The Oscar Night Gala has been held at the Rail Events Center for the last number of years. There is a VIP reception, a step and repeat photo booth, a green screen photo booth, and me capturing candid photos.
La La Land almost stole best picture, but Moonlight pulled out the win, after I left! I missed out on the big controversy. Apparently it was a bigger comeback than the Patriots win in the Super Bowl over the Atlanta Falcons. And I missed it.
It is a fun night. My job is to capture candids, some group photos, and some of the details of the night. It is similar to a wedding reception—photograph people before they get too drunk!
Mama J was the musical entertainment during the dinner portion of the evening. Fantastic music and very entertaining.
The emcees for the event were from Utah’s Channel 4 morning show. They interview the audience, drum up support for the silent auction, and move the night along during commercial breaks.
