I am writing this blog post in 2014 and I was hesitant to put these photographs online in 2014. At the time I photographed this family in 2008 I was using the best camera I could afford and I was still working on my skills as a portrait photographer. I have gotten soooo much better since this photo shoot. In fact, I have photographed the Sutherland family again in 2010 and in 2012! And the photographs from those shoots are light-years better than what I could do in 2008.

Three photo shoots over the space of 4 years and there is a world of difference due to new gear and due to my improvement as a photographer.
This photo shoot was originally scheduled for an outdoor photo shoot at Wheeler Farm. The weather this December was rather warm and dry and so that didn’t seem like a problem. Well, the weather changed the day of the photo shoot and we needed to go indoors to get this done right. We settled on the Utah Capitol Building. It was very dark in the Capitol that day. Much of the light for the capitol comes from skylights in the roofs and that was covered by snow! So we had my camera’s lights and I had to bump of the ISO which, with the older Nikon digital camera, didn’t look as great. So I am glad I switch to newer Canon gear. My photographs are night and day different!
These photographs are a bit over processed and I have changed my style since this 2008 photo shoot. You can see the Sutherland Family in their 2010 Wheeler Farm Family Photography shoot and you can also check out photographs of the family photo shoot at the Salt Lake Library in 2012.

[…] 2010. I could use these 3 photo shoots to show a progression in my skills as a photographer. In the 2008 shoot I was using a now obsolete 6-megapixel digital camera and then in 2010 I had upgraded and was getting even better photographs. Now in 2012 I have even […]
