Here are a lot of photos. I use my own family as practice for photography and for different types of photography. If you want something different for your family’s portraits… look at doing an activity and have a photographer there to document the activity.
The “family portrait” is often the formal posed portrait with everyone looking and hopefully smiling at the camera. However, if you can capture kids to adults having fun together doing something, the photographs become alive and have more meaning.
The family went to a Springville pumpkin patch and I just photographed the happenings and going on of the kids and family. They played in the corn. There were mazes. There was a hay ride through the corn field. We did some staged photos here and there but for the most part it is the family having fun.
What could your family do? A hike in the canyons? A bike ride through the park? It could be an evening of making cookies. There are a lot of family activities you can do and hire a photographer to document everything. You can ban everyone’s cellphones to make the time more authentic and keep people in the activity.
Summertime is winding down and kids will be heading to school soon. Autumn is around the corner. Autumn is a great time for family portraits; posed or candid.
Here we have Molly posing like a model and Levi just being Levi. The kids had a fun time and the photos show that, hooray!
The next photo is out of focus, but I love it! The color, composition, you can see what it is… it looks cool.
We did get one giant group photo of the family. Yay!
And then we created some portraits of each kid with the pumpkins.
Luke was promised he could have a pumpkin and he had a worried look because he thought someone might take his pumpkin.
It’s a lot of fun being the family photographer. Someone mentioned to my sister that they found the “family website.” They were of course referring to this website which does feature my family pretty prominently, ha! That is pretty cool. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of good practice to hone my skills as a photographer and now as a budding videographer. The kids make great test subjects.
