For the past five years I have had the opportunity to photograph The Spoon’s new menu for the next year. These are some of their newest creations that will be featured in 2020. They’re located in Provo, Utah if you want to try them out. They’re located in the Nu Skin Innovation Center.
In total, we had about 45 menu items to photograph. We don’t have a lot of time for the high end food styling. However, I bring my toolkit with giant tweezers, q-tips, and t-pins to help punch up the food. I am also using a style of lighting that is very corporate and consistent since the first food shoot. Even though things are consistent in the lighting, there have been some improvements to create a little more event light. It also means that we can crank through the menu pretty quickly. We shoot the first round in about 5 hours which is record time for that many menu items. I then process the files and send them over for review.
These photographs are from the second round of shooting. There were some alterations to ingredients that were important. Due to allergy concerns, we have to include all the ingredients in the photograph so no one is surprised. By the way, if you do visit The Spoon and you have allergy concerns, just talk to the fine folks, and they’ll answer all your questions.
The menu is featuring a number of vegan cheese, meat alternatives, and other items for people of a varied dietary background. Pretty cool stuff.
The next item is their Nubano… their version of a Cubano sandwich. I had to chance to sample this and it was delicious.
I’m hoping that in 2020 I will get to photograph some more food photography. I should even be proactive and just start some of my own creations with some dynamic creative lighting. It’ll be fun. Maybe even a New Year’s Resolution to shoot more food.
