Utah has some amazing locations for photography. One of the more unique locations is the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. About 90 minutes from Salt Lake City is a sea of salt that is dry from August to October. That is the best time for portraits. I recommend bringing big studio lights for photo shoots. The drama I can create with these lights is my favorite way to shoot.
This shoot involved 3 models and a BMW. We arrived right as a storm was brewing. You don’t always know what the weather will be like when you go to the salt flats. I have been rained out and other times it is sunny. I love it when there are some storm clouds but no bad weather.
We had about an hour of shooting before rain forced us to pack up and leave. Each model had their own session and then we had some group poses. We would move the lighting to change the background. The one downside of the salt flats is the ground is flat and there are some mountains in one direction. So the subject becomes the person.
We had a lot of fun on this shoot. Models would change outfits in the car and we could have different looks from each model.
