Bore Wells & Seeds of Hope in Malawi

by dav.d

This past May I had the opportunity to travel for Nu Skin to Malawi in southern Africa. Malawi faces many challenges and Nu Skin’s Force for Good Foundation has led a number of humanitarian efforts in the country. I’m featuring the bore wells that have been donated along with their Seeds of Hope program where fruit trees are planted and people are taught how to grow the trees to help feed local villages.

The different a quality well makes is huge. Before the bore well, the water came from shallow wells that often led to dysentery or other water born diseases. The bore wells are drilled even deeper, at several hundred feet deep and better water can then be supplied to a village.

Water is the essential ingredient to life. With a good well, the villagers can begin to thrive and grow crops and don’t spend as much time transporting water long distances.

Another program from the Force for Good initiative is the Seeds of Hope. A portion of Nu Skin’s Epoch® Baobab Body Butter goes to fund the Malawi Seeds of Hope Project. Malawi suffers a lot of deforestation, and the Seeds of Hope project is trying to bring fruit trees and baobab trees back to help the local villages.

The villages would protect the trees with these brick housings.

As I photographed the wells and trees, our tour guides were the local children and as they ran they would chant following their teacher’s promptings. They are learning English so they would chant, “I run, I run, I run!” “I jump, I jump, I jump!” It was fun to watch and document.

I’ll be sharing some more blog posts from my travels to Malawi. One doesn’t go halfway around the world, and not share a bunch of photos! I’ll distribute them between other blog posts. I have so many photos to share.
