Hopefully I can convince the world, and myself that family photographs can be taken anywhere and look amazing. Although, it really helps to have a killer location with killer light. However, you can even create photographs in your backyard. I photographed an extended family last year in Holladay, Utah. We had 3 generations of family present. It does help that the backyard is what I call a “Mr. Miyagi” backyard. If you haven’t seen the original Karate Kid, you will miss the reference. The yard was sculpted and had a koi pond and trees. I brought my portable lighting kit because that helps make people look awesome.
We did the big group photograph and then we broke out and photographed individual family units. We also did an all guys photo. We also photographed the patriarchs with their pets.
After this family session I did have the priviledge to photograph the main couple’s commitment ceremony. I’ll be blogging that wonderful event at a later date.
For family portraits, we usually shoot for about an hour of photography. We keep things fast paced so the kids don’t lose too much interest. If we slow down, me might lose them and control.
I’m looking forward to spring! Winter is fine, and the snow is beautiful at times. Once Spring hits and we have green appearing it becomes a perfect time for family portraits.
